Sources of Strength

Sources of Strength was founded by a group of experts in the field of resilience. They studied the experiences of people who overcame seemingly insurmountable difficulties, and they wanted to know what set these people apart? How were these people able to bounce back after some of the biggest setbacks in their lives? The answer is resilience and the answer is in the wheel. The people who bounced back were the people who had some of these eight strength slices in their lives. The more slices someone had, the better they were able to bounce back. That is resilience, your ability to bounce back up when everything else is stacked against you when you fall. That is what the wheel represents.

SMS provides a Sources of Strength curriculum class called "Design for Change" which is a student-led course that aims to create activities and campaigns within SMS to educate and create awareness of the Sources of Strength program. Students use the Design Thinking process to brainstorm ideas, create solutions, implement ideas/solutions and then critically reflect on the solution and if they met the intended goal. Students learn to use the process to overcome roadblocks or problems as they plan the implementation of their ideas/solutions.
